Star Wars Cookies

17 Feb

I have a confession:  I haven’t seen any of the Star Wars movies.  I don’t really know why. We watched a lot of musicals in our house.  Is that an explanation or just another strange confession?

Couple that fact with the reality that this was my first large custom cookie order and I had a fair amount of anxiety about making them.   For the most part I am very pleased with the results, I know that cookies number 55 – 60 were better than the first few, but that is to be expected.  I learnt a lot.  Which is probably my favorite part of any custom order.

Isabella’s Cookie Bars

27 Jan

Isabella loves cookie bars.  A cookie bar is Bella-speak for a chocolate chip granola bar.   She eats a lot of them, enough, in fact,  that they have come up on my radar as something I should try to make at home.  A challenge.  I suspected that we had most of the ingredients at home already and I was right.  I am very happy with the results.  The recipe is courtesy of Deb at smitten kitchen via King Arthur Flour.  Both are fantastic resources.

I just went with it when it came to mixing in additions, I basically added every ingredient in my pantry that made sense to add to a granola bar.  Chocolate chips, since they were my hook in getting Isabella to eat them, raisins and flaked, unsweetened coconut for interest and flavor, puffed rice for texture and flax seeds for health.

Snow Day

21 Jan

We woke up to snow this morning.  Just enough to blanket bicycles and trees.  Just enough to silence the cars and foot steps.  Just enough to make a few good snow balls.

This is the first year that Isabella has been able to call a snowball a snowball.  We ran and played and threw snow high into the air.  And then we headed inside and made Rice Krispie Treats and Hot Chocolate.  We smeared a few of the squares with peanut butter and drizzled them with dark chocolate.  It has been a great day.

Merry Christmas!

24 Dec

Cookie and candy making for Christmas 2011 is complete!  This year our cookies are a tribute to Philadelphia, the city that we have called home for 6 years now.  (How did that happen?)  Liberty Bell (complete with crack) and LOVE statue cookies, dressed in their red, green and glittery holiday best.  Isabella made Christmas trees and ornaments, she would like me to let you know that she did them all by herself (almost).

Chocolate Ganache “Wreath” Sandwich Cookies

6 Dec

I have been trying to make a wreath.   It isn’t really working.  All of Martha’s suggestions require tools and materials that I haven’t even heard of, let alone have lying around the apartment.  So I abandoned the project and made wreath shaped cookies instead.

My favorite desserts combine chocolate and vanilla.   Éclairs with chocolate ganache and vanilla pastry cream, perfect! Yellow cake with chocolate fudge frosting, sublime! These cookies fall right in line, crispy vanilla cookies with dark chocolate sandwiched between them.  Add a little powdered sugar and you have the perfect holiday cookie.
