Isabella’s Birthday Cake: A Preview

8 Dec

We celebrated Isabella’s 1st birthday by making pink cupcakes.  Mama, Daddy and Bella each had one, we sang Happy Birthday and put this little one to bed.  Martin and I toasted to surviving our first year as parents by opening a nice bottle of wine and polishing off the rest of the cupcakes.  This year we are going to have a party, a small party.  A couple of Isabella’s friends and their parents, friends of Martin’s and mine and of course there will be cake.

Isabella loves Yo Gabba Gabba.  She will tell you, “Isabella LOVES Muno.  Isabella LOVES Foofa.  Isabella LOVES …..”  You get the idea.  So a Yo Gabba Gabba cake it is.  It is a good theme for my second fondant cake – the characters are bright and relatively simple.  The show is incredibly graphic and popp-y, with lots of 80’s inspiration.

We tied on a couple of aprons yesterday afternoon and set to making the 5 main characters from the show and some accents.  Isabella got her own mat, fondant and some cookie cutters.  She was very serious about adding just the right amount of powdered sugar to make sure the fondant didn’t stick.  She never ceases to amaze me.  When she saw me using a rolling pin to flatten out a piece of fondant she simply took her cup, finished the water, and turned into on her side – working the fondant like a pro.

The party is on Sunday – stay tuned for the finished product!
